[2025-09-29 19:34:26] Hello everyone. So kind of like Bob Ross style painting there are no mistakes. Only happy accidents. I have been unsuccessful in installing Void Linux. I know I am missing something small and stupid step wise. So in order to avoid waiting for a video to upload and get ready. I took screenshots of the entire Void Linux installation step by step and turned it into a GIF. I figured if it [2025-09-29 19:34:26] not only helped me to figure out what I am doing wrong. I can slap a creative commons license on the GIF and hand it over to the void developers. That way you could either put it in the installation wiki, or have a link to it so people can visually see step by step how to install Void Linux the right way. [2025-09-29 19:35:11] Once you all tell me what the right way is and where I am messing up. I will redo the GIF and pop it up on a git repo with a cc license if you want to use it in the docs. [2025-09-29 19:35:17] https://ibb.co/8nz5RjZR [2025-09-29 19:35:51] Please someone tell me where I am messing up and how to correct my mistake so I can get the base install in a VM accomplished the right way? [2025-09-29 19:38:45] Every time i view the error log the VM freezes up. No idea why that is happening either. [2025-09-29 19:39:34] So I'm hoping this void Linux installation GIF can point to why that error is happening and why it is messing up. [2025-09-29 19:40:21] not sure what kind of lesson people can get of a failed install gif [2025-09-29 19:40:24] report a specific problem and ask a specific question [2025-09-29 19:40:37] don't expect people to watch your gif flash by and spot your problem [2025-09-29 19:40:57] This is a rough draft for troubleshooting. I will redo it the right way when I know what the right way is kol. [2025-09-29 19:41:08] lol*** [2025-09-29 19:41:26] do you have a specific question about a problem you're having? [2025-09-29 19:41:36] I'm hoping that someone who has installed void Linux before will spot my mistake if I made one. [2025-09-29 19:42:03] That is the question. Can anyone who has installed void Linux before spot my mistake and help me correct it. [2025-09-29 19:42:04] LimitlessGrit: you can try to follow the fine install docs [2025-09-29 19:42:11] *** ChanServ (ChanServ@services.libera.chat) has changed mode for #voidlinux to +o ahesford [2025-09-29 19:42:20] *** ahesford (~ahesford@zfsbootmenu/core/ahesford) has kicked LimitlessGrit off channel #voidlinux: come back when you have a specific question [2025-09-29 19:42:22] *** ahesford (~ahesford@zfsbootmenu/core/ahesford) has changed mode for #voidlinux to -o ahesford [2025-09-29 19:42:43] Please work with me here. I'm obviously struggling. [2025-09-29 19:42:55] I've read the docs. [2025-09-29 19:43:06] I can't figure out where I am messing up. [2025-09-29 19:43:16] but did you follow them? [2025-09-29 19:44:30] the installer told you grub failed to install and told you to look at tty8 [2025-09-29 19:44:54] so perhaps look there [2025-09-29 19:45:10] yes. I believe I have followed them, but somehow someway I must have missed something. I've gone back and reread it many times. I've tried installing this over 20 times. I am struggling. I need someone with the heart of a saint to look at what I am doing and help me. I tried to look at tty8. Every time I tried the VM froze. no clue why. [2025-09-29 19:45:53] it froze when looking at tty8? [2025-09-29 19:46:03] Yes. No clue why. [2025-09-29 19:46:21] I guess you'd better figure that out so you can discover why grub fails [2025-09-29 19:47:29] You're killing me smalls. [2025-09-29 19:47:54] I'm not asking for the world here. Just someone watch the GIF and tell me where I am messing up? [2025-09-29 19:48:08] we don't know! it doesn't show the error message! [2025-09-29 19:48:36] So your saying according to you everything that I have done so far is right? [2025-09-29 19:48:47] *** ChanServ (ChanServ@services.libera.chat) has changed mode for #voidlinux to +b *!*@user/LimitlessGrit [2025-09-29 19:48:47] *** ChanServ (ChanServ@services.libera.chat) has kicked LimitlessGrit off channel #voidlinux: Banned: we won't do your thinking for you [2025-09-29 19:48:55] try again tomorrow [2025-09-29 19:49:53] LOL, he should have read the "acquire a symptom description" chapter from one of my troubleshooting books, as well as ESR and Rick Moen's "Asking Questions the Smart Way". [2025-09-29 19:50:11] fuck esr [2025-09-29 19:50:26] ^ [2025-09-29 19:51:21] <`Stefan`> probably misconfigured VM for efi, i bet bios mode would have worked [2025-09-29 19:52:11] systemdsucks, let's forget about esr's politics and gun fascination and all that junk. He's done a lot for Free Software, including the page I mentioned, the "Cathedral and the Bazarre" book, which helped me understand things, and Fetchmail, which I use every 3 minutes. Yeah, I don't agree with his politics. [2025-09-29 19:52:12] I don't think he even say what VM [2025-09-29 19:52:47] stevelitt: that's the thing, he herded the cattle from free software to corporate controled open source [2025-09-29 19:52:50] so fuck him [2025-09-29 19:53:03] enough with esr [2025-09-29 19:55:54] How often do you people think people like that last guy, who clearly can't express himself and doesn't care, come to this IRC channel? Maybe a simple doc can help. [2025-09-29 19:57:36] usually irc itself has been a good filter for these types [2025-09-29 20:00:09] also, what would that simple doc tell these people? [2025-09-29 20:00:18] "maybe ClaudePilot GPT can help you" [2025-09-29 20:00:41] they cleary aren't helped by general advice [2025-09-29 20:02:33] lemmi, it would start by asking (or in this case answering) the question "What indicates to you that there's a malfunction?" Expressing it this way eliminates answers like "it's the output capacitor" or general nonsense like this guy did. [2025-09-29 20:03:49] Then you have reproduction questions: "Do you know of a procedure to CONSISTENTLY produce this symptom?" The answer to this question indicates whether it's currently an intermittent or a reproducible. Intermittents and reproducibles use very different tactics to narrow things down. [2025-09-29 20:04:17] but that's exactly what was asked in the first place and it did not help. just excuses and more of the same [2025-09-29 20:05:08] and wow.. really for 0.5 seconds the obvious error right at the last frame of the gif.. seriously [2025-09-29 20:05:12] what a pain in the ass [2025-09-29 20:05:25] Then narrowing questions: What other things are you noticing, and describe all 5 senses. When did you first notice this? What other things did you notice this symptom? What other things were done or noticed around the same time? Where is it happening and where is it not happening? [2025-09-29 20:06:50] nah.. the question would have been "grub failed to install using the installer, what do i do?" and one step further: "how do i learn what really went wrong?" [2025-09-29 20:06:57] "It smells like you suck at Linux" [2025-09-29 20:08:43] lemmi, your suggested first question makes a lot of untested assumptions, just like "it's the output capacitor". ahesford , I suck at Linux, but I can still formulate a symptom description anybody can use to help me. [2025-09-29 20:08:58] stevelitt: have you watched the gif? [2025-09-29 20:09:40] maybe it's a flux capacitor error [2025-09-29 20:09:43] lemmi, no, because whatever it was its link was surrounded by walls of silly questions and gripes, so I didn't see the URL. [2025-09-29 20:09:43] the goddam thing ends extactly at the point of the error. how about you start with that and work backwards? [2025-09-29 20:10:47] systemdsucks, I'll answer your last post offline, directly to you... [2025-09-29 20:10:58] the problem is that those ppl dump a picture here, expect us to magically know what they need, and just repeat themselves when asked for clarification. if they were able to converse meaningfully, there would be no problem.
